Wild Blackberry (Rubus Species)

The blackberry is not a true berry. It is an aggregate fruit, composed of small clusters of round shiny berries stuck together. Each cluster has its own seed, so an animal eating one fruit spreads a lot of seeds.

Wild blackberries are similar to the ones on the market except that it is smaller but better tasting and  among the best-known berries in USA. I find  a lot of wild blackberry plant everywhere in my yard and by the side road.

The plant is thorny, arching cane with sharply toothed leaflets, white to pinkish  flowers, about 2-3 cm in diameter. The flowers starts to bloom in the spring and early summer. The fruit, ripens successively  from summer to early fall, goes from green to red to black.

Be careful from picking for the best berries, they are thorny and you'll often get scratched and may stain clothes. I always get scratches but still loves picking them. The berries, are also good for dyeing. Here is my son enjoying the taste of fresh wild blackberry in our backyard.

  1. I thought the blackberry mentioned is the mobile phone! Joke, we don't grow blackberries in the Philippines so I find it interested to read about them.

  2. I haven't eaten any blackberry yet but I often see that in our business presentation. Blackberry is full of vitamins as it is rich in Vitamin A, C, K, and E. thus it helps prevent cancer and heart disease.

  3. How life was much simpler when blackberries were just a fruit. We used to eat wild berries (not sure about the variety) in Baguio when we were still kids.

  7. Picking up some fruits in ones backyard is so rare here in Manila.
Maybe in provinces, there are still who plant vegies and fruits in their
backyards. I wish to experience this Ms. Tess and your son seemed
to enjoy picking up some in your own grounds.
