Many people feel uncomfortable in crowds. With all the media attention associated with random acts of violence, gangs’ wars or people dying in crown stampedes, there are good reasons to be weary in crowded situations. Even the very popular flash mobs which many of us associate with musical numbers on YouTube can be the perfect opportunity for thieves and other criminal acts. However, no one should feel afraid in a crowd, the following guide http://www.homesecuritystore.com/guides/Crowd-Control-Guide.pdf offers very valuable tips on remaining safe. It is very important to be always aware of your surroundings, by knowing what is happening around you, you will be able to notice any suspicious changes and alert the proper authorities. When entering a public or crowded situation, make sure to plan your exit strategy as soon as you enter. By locating the exits you will be able to make a swift disappearance if the need arises. Human stampedes often occur when people in groups follow a crowd mentality, pushing and shoving to exits. The only way to remain safe is to remain upright and calm without pushing making your way to the exit. The old saying goes the an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, therefore feeling prepared for a potential emergency may make you feel more secure if the need arises. Self defense classes or even some basic CPR training may be enough to make you feel like you can help yourself and others in an emergency. In a true emergency you should help yourself first, by eliminating yourself from the situation by either running or hiding, before you decide to help other. Remember the only way you can help other people if to be in a safe situation yourself. By remaining calm, collected and vigilant crowded situations are nothing to fear.

Maintain Safety in Crowds and Public

this act of alertness and presence of mind makes me feel paranoid but we surely cannot take our safety and security for granted. especially in places where we are foreigners where we can be easily and randomly picked (or should i say even in our own country?) i still and always keep in mind to look for the fire exits and stay on well-lit areas especially when alone.
ReplyDeleteBeing calm is very important when it comes to emergencies in a crowd it's also important to have the mindset to be prepared both emotionally and physically for situations like this.
ReplyDeleteYes this is true, I am uncomfortable with crowd too, that is why when I am in a new place or building thats crowded I first look for the emergency exit door, see if windows and try not to be very far from it =)
ReplyDeleteIn reality it's hard to stay calm when all you see are people panicking. I don't know if I can be calm in an emergency situation. I hope I can just have that presence of mind especially when my kids are with me.
ReplyDeleteThere's always danger in crowded places because of the opportunist people around. They take advantage of the situation and perform what they do best. Alertness and presence of mind are of the essence to avoid unpleasant incidents.
ReplyDeleteAlways be observant and keep your composure. Avoid getting into a rush when emergency situation arises. Madalas maraming nasasaktan kapag may stampede.
ReplyDeletePersonally, I feel I need to be extra vigilant when I go to my home country... Now, why is that?
ReplyDeleteOne thing that I actually need to practice and focus on is my panicky trait. I easily panic (that's probably why I didn't pursue a medical degree!) when things go berserk. Slowly but surely, I know getting to that more calmer state. :)
ReplyDeleteI think there is much sense in saying that an individual can contribute much to the solution if he or she remains safe. BY being safe, help can still be possible.
ReplyDeletePresence of mind is definitely a must in situations like this... and lots of prayers for safety and guidance.
ReplyDeleteA risk assessment of the venue can reveal physical features that may lead to overcrowding and possible injury. So I would agree with you to this.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, being observant is necessary. To avoid any problems don't bring any expensive stuff when you're in public place.
ReplyDeleteThis is why I don't like going to a concert, I don't like crowds, you can't breath and it is very noisy. I hate it! And one thing more I'm a nervous person.
ReplyDeleteI'm not really afraid of crowds. I'm afraid of the shady characters that may be in the crowds. Haha. I've had more than my fair share of bad experiences with bad people in crowds.
ReplyDeleteHelpful tips like this can go a long way. Hopefully, people remember what they read here so they can utilize it.
ReplyDeleteIf I may add, I highly recommend undergoing a First Aid qualification course offered by Red Cross. It's less than a thousand pesos and the value of the class is literally life-saving.
ReplyDeleteNowadays, I've always been trying to be alert in crowded places especially when I am at the Metro and tagging along my little boy. Its really important that we should be cautious of the people around us.
ReplyDeletePanic is the first reaction but we should be calm and clear our mind to think faster and to avoid being struck in the middle of uncontrollable crowds. Just to be safe!
ReplyDeleteI know what you mean. That's why I try to avoid crowd in malls and other places especially now that I have a little girl. I can handle mobs and crowds but with a kid in tow, it's a different thing altogether.
ReplyDeleteI hear you, I don't like crowded places. I especially avoid going to malls on weekends because of that.
ReplyDeleteThanks for this. I also avoid crowds (like sales) but sometimes, it cannot be avoided to find oneself amidst a throng of people. This post (and link) is really helpful.
