5 Tips to Become a Domestic Goddess

Every woman has the power to be a domestic goddess. It's a worthwhile goal for women who have fast paced careers and for those who preside over a busy home. It does not mean achieving perfection. That is a goal that will only leave you stressed out and crazy. Being a domestic goddess is more of a state of mind. It’s feeling powerful, resourceful and flexible enough to cope with whatever surprises life throws at you next.

1. Have a Schedule

A good schedule simplifies everything. You can establish a routine for pretty much anything with just a pen and some paper. Designate certain days of the week when specific chores will be done. Wednesday and Saturday could be laundry days. Thursday may be for vacuuming. You might have time to get two or three chores done on one day. Your schedules can be refined as the weeks progress and you discover what works and what doesn’t. The point is that if you don’t have a schedule for when these house and garden chores are supposed to be done, then they will never get done. We get so wrapped up in the daily round of dishes and picking up the kids’ toys that many of the bigger chores get pushed aside, leaving our houses dirty and us feeling like we’re anything but goddess-like. Banish that feeling by developing a workable schedule.

 2. Plan Ahead

A calendar is an indispensable tool for every family. Get one and place it prominently in your home. Record reminders on it regarding the day of the school play and when the next soccer practice is. However, you can take it one step farther by having a personal calendar where you can keep tabs on everything from when to send in the check for the electric bill to your doctor appointment next month. Include reminders about birthdays, holidays and other family occasions. Make entries that remind you to send a card or call a friend on a certain day. Perhaps the most important thing the domestic goddess can plan for is the dinner menu. Always plan at least two weeks in advance. Using your calendar, write down the dinner menu for each night, then build a grocery list around that menu. You’ll never have to wonder what’s for dinner and you’ll always be prepared to make multiple dishes. Planning the dinner menu erases a multitude of hassles, leaves you with some free time and helps you feel in control of the situation.

 3. Keep a Budget

Sometimes, being a domestic goddess is all about doing more with less. Practice frugality in the home by repurposing old items. Try to fix things that break before you replace them. Clip coupons and resolve to only buy those items at the grocery store that appear on your list. Stay on top of how much money you have for household maintenance, entertainment, groceries and other expenses. Knowing what you have can be very empowering even if it’s not a fortune.

 4. Be the Mistress of Do It Yourself

Fixing a leaky faucet or using appliance paint to repair a scratch on the dishwasher can be enormously satisfying. Before calling a repairman, look into doing something yourself. You’ll probably learn something new and useful while having fun at the same time. While you’re exploring the do it yourself world, look into making things to use around the house. You can make your own laundry detergent with borax, washing soda and Fels Naptha soap. Perhaps you’d like to learn how to can vegetables. Do it yourself projects save you loads of money and make you feel refreshingly resourceful.

 5. Take Time to Appreciate Yourself

You’ve worked hard, developing a schedule, planning ahead, sticking to a budget and learning how to fix and build things yourself. Now it’s time for a reward. Take a few minutes to sit back with a cup of tea and watch the world go by. When you take a few moments to reward yourself for a job well done, you’ll find that you are re-energized and can be more gracious and giving than ever.
