As the year ends, Bangko Central ng Pilipinas has begun circulating 10 million pieces of the new One Peso coin to commemorate the 150th Birth Anniversary of the Philippines National Hero Jose P. Rizal. The coin is 24 millimeters in diameter at 5.35 grams , the same size and weight as the one-peso coin now in circulation .On the side of Rizal's portrait is etched "150 years","Republika ng Pilipinas "and "1861-2011".The reverse side carries the new BSP seal, “1-piso,” and “2011”. For many decades now, Rizal is still the proud owner or face of the 1-peso coin.
Lapu-lapu used to be on the one-centavo coin and was last seen in the aluminum coin with his earrings and head gear . It was so light it could float on water and was even used by the tailors as buttons. I haven't seen one but would love to have it to give to my coin collector husband.
We don't the reason why the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas keeps on changing the inscription of the 1-piso coin. I may surmise to say that those persons behind this are wanting to reemphasize the missing historical value of that coin. The point, anyway is its acceptability as a PH tender currency.

I remember that coin with Lapu-lapu on it. Indeed, it was so light. And Tess, do you also remember the 5-centavo coin with Tandang Sora on it? It was shaped like a flower!
ReplyDeleteyes ,i still remember that 5 centavo flower shaped coin.how I wish to have all the old coins we had back then.
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen the new coin. I wish we still have the old old ones. I still remember the big 1-peso coin during Marcos' time. The light worthless 10-centavo coins and the like were the worst.
ReplyDeletehaven't seen this 1 Peso yet..thanks for sharing this Sir Gil!
ReplyDeletewow i like that one piso coin... i will add that to my collection...
ReplyDeleteoh I wrote about this last December 11, 2011 http://travel-on-a-shoe-string.blogspot.com/2011/12/1-peso-commemorative-coins-will-be.html
ReplyDeleteThe reason BSP change the design is to catch the attention of Filipinos and made them aware of their lineage.
I remember a jeepney driver who really fancied over this new coin.
ReplyDeleteJust my two cents
oo nga tama ka jan tatess we hardly learn what is history on money but we keep on handling it, pero magpprotesta na ako pag may nasamang celebrity tulad ni Kris o sino pa man
ReplyDeleteI love the new design of our new peso coin.
ReplyDeleteSo time to keep the old coins and add to my collection.
ReplyDeleteI remember the old 2 peso bill that got decommissioned because of this.
ReplyDeleteI think there is a reason why monies change. Something to do with making it harder to make counterfeit. I can be wrong though don't quote me on this. :p

Wow! I've never known that there really is a new 1 peso coin. Must've been late with the news:) Thanks for this valuable info. am not a numismatic here but I'm looking forward to having my first ever new 1-peso coin. (^_^)
ReplyDeleteIn this case, there is a reason behind the change and that is to commemorate Rizal. I have yet to get a hold of this coin. Might as well keep a piece of the current one. :-)
ReplyDeleteWe used to play with lapu lapu coins when I was a child when we play tinda-tindahan. Have not got hold of the 1 peso coin with the new design yet. Wasn't even aware there's a new design, thanks to your post I now know :)
ReplyDeleteMerry Christmas from RJ's Mama

ReplyDeleteLove to see this new coin on April during my vacation. It's be a long tie since I have seen a new coin from Philippines
ReplyDeleteRizal's only tragedy was becoming our country's national hero...
ReplyDeleteI dont see the need why we need a new one ... its just a waste of resources ... it should have been used for better things
ReplyDeleteThanks tess for posting this. Though we are in the banking sector. We still has no update on this. :-).
ReplyDeleteay bat wala pa aq nito? limited lng b irelease ng banko sentral as in for collectors?
.
As far as think of Finance, it is indeed significant to change the faces of our coins and bank notes I just forgot why. Well, the BSP has so much knowledge about monetary policy and I think they can handle the situation for it is the banks of all banks that secure the Philippine monetary tools and the stability of currencies.
ReplyDeleteWow! may bagong design na pala ang One Peso coin, sana makapagtabi ako maski isa lang, as a souvenir.. :)
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year tatess! :P
