A Good Name

How do you value your name? Is it synonymous to credibility, honesty and truthfulness? Billy Joel's song, Honesty, goes like: "Honesty, it's such a lonely word, everyone is so untrue." Just look at the political news, it is not hard to find dishonest people and yet these same people expect to be treated with honesty as if they deserve it! In the Philippines, there is a popular saying, "Ang magnanakaw ay kapatid ng sinungalin." (A thief is a sibling of a liar.) With so many thieves and so many liars, it really seems that honesty is hard to find.

Are you willing to sacrifice hardships just to be honest? Is going upstream a natural choice when everyone else chose the opposite? Are you concerned that your name will be tainted even with a white lie? Do you realize that a lie, whatever color it is, is still a lie? When you find out that you were given more than the actual change you should receive, like even just a peso, do you give it back or do you justify that it is his or her mistake? In school, do you think that copying another's test answer is all right since it was freely given to you anyway? Who do you think are you cheating, your classmate or yourself?

Do you find it all right if people classify you as dishonest since you do not care what other people say anyway? Or do you get disappointed or angry because you care so much about your good name that you do everything in your power to be honest not only to yourself but because you know that there is a Higher Power that regards truth and honesty highly?

"A Good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favor rather then silver and gold." (Prov. 22:1)

  1. Congratulations Julian! Great job!
It is really important to value our name.. the only thing that could really identify us for generations to come!

  2. For me honesty is a loose word thrown around by the politicians in the Philippines. I seriously do not like hearing politicians say certain things and do something else entirely. I'm getting riled up because of the upcoming elections and the political ads that are being shown almost everywhere in the past few weeks.

  3. I think a good name is a treasure in itself and it's something we have take care of. Even if the world has a lot of dishonest people, it doesn't always follow that we go on with the crowd.

  4. Honesty is the best policy and you are always strong when you side with the truth. Your name can be cleared and your conscience will be good as well when you manage to make your integrity be positive.

  5. Our name is our whole being, I think when a person lies, his name will be at risk not just his name but his whole being.

  9. your name, how common it is, represents you as a person. So whatever you do, you must be responsible as your name bears all of these.

  11. I'm for the latter --- I get angry or disappointed whenever my name is put into a bad light, despite having done all the right things. I do my best to do things the honest way. It's just a shame that some people do the opposite, all in the name of popularity, fame, etc.

  12. I was raised relatively well by both my grandma and my mother. Without a father-figure to "discipline me", relatives thought I'd grow up into a troublesome kid. Turns out my feminine parenting has made me a more honest AND stronger man, who understands both sides of the fence.

  13. I guess because I was born into a family whose name has always been associated with prestige and money, I never really put much important to having a good name...it was more or less taken for granted. Honesty, integrity and trustworthiness are all good values to have and will certainly allow people to keep their good name.

  14. Having a good name and earning credibility for it are two different things. With all the temptation around us,it is really difficult although possible to be good and thereby establish a good name.

  15. Honesty or an honest person is pretty rare nowadays, especially with politicians. Just saying!

  16. For me, I'd be upset if someone questions my honesty and integrity. And just like a saying, "Honesty is the Best Policy".

  17. A combination of a good name and a good integrity is great, however achieving both is very crucial.

  18. Most of us worked so hard to become who we are right now, name is just a name but of course our name carries the reputations that we have earned. However, white lies has become part of our lives too it's to avoid it. Of course we tried our best to live life with honesty that way we will earn trust.
