A day at Corniche

Corniche typically refers to a road on the side of a cliff or mountain, with the ground rising on one side of the road and falling away on the other.

In Middle East countries  like Qatar, the word typically describes a waterfront promenade usually paralleled by a main road, such as the renowned Doha Corniche.

Me and my kids went out to Corniche, one of the attractive place in Doha .It was a fine Saturday morning, the weather was good ,no sand storm and not too cold. There was no traffic along the way. The place was so quiet and peaceful. People of different nationalities were enjoying the nice weather by just sitting on the cool green lawns underneath the palm trees, hang out with friends and relatives, work out at the broad pavement, buying fresh fish or just simply watch the calm water.

My children had fun playing while I enjoyed taking pictures of them. In one part of Corniche fishermen were selling their freshly catch fish off the boat at a very reasonable price .I got  almost 4 kilos of fish plus 1 added lobster for just QR 15.

At the far end of the Corniche is a pyramid shaped building Sheraton Hotel, one of Doha's most iconic buildings where my husband and me had our very first date 6 years ago.

Qatar

Qatar was my home for  7 years, a small but rich country in GCC. A place full of hope and dreams among OFW like me. I first landed in this country on July 28, 2003, fell in love, got married on 2004 and the rest was history. My favorite shopping mall is City Center, Villagio Mall and of course for food stuff  Lulu Hypermarket  followed by Family Food Center.

Qatar also known as the State of Qatar or locally Dawlat Qatar is headed by Emir H.H Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani and  his son Prime Minister Hamad bin Jassim bin Jaber Al Thani. Doha is the capital of Qatar and the largest city. The country is boarded by Saudi Arabia to  the south  and surrounded by the Persian Gulf which separates it from Bahrain. Qatar is an  oil- and gas-rich nation, with the third largest gas reserves and the highest GDP per capita in the world.

An absolute monarchy, Qatar has been ruled by the al-Thani family since the mid-1800s and has since transformed itself from a poor British protectorate noted mainly for pearling into an independent state with significant oil and natural gas revenues.During the late 1980s and early 1990s, the Qatari economy was crippled by a continuous siphoning off of petroleum revenues by the Emir, who had ruled the country since 1972. His son, the current Amir Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, overthrew him in a bloodless coup in 1995. In 2001, Qatar resolved its longstanding border disputes with both Bahrain and Saudi Arabia.(wikipedia)

Someone that I Used to Love

Does this song sounds familiar to you? It's an old song sung by Natalie Cole and Barbara Streisand  during  the 80's.I just don't know if there is a revival .I read it from one of my niece's shout out in Friendster (I know,FS is out and FB is in or is it twitter or tumblr?) and brings back memories of the past.Someone who was a  part of my life.We couldn't help but think about them sometimes, right?Men who became a part of our life and made us think that we wont survive the life without them. But that was the thing of the past .We already moved on  and found the right one.One thing is for sure ,we still remember them but the feeling has gone.Which reminds me of another song "I remember the boys but I don't remember the feelings anymore".

Oh, sorry for feeling sentimental this morning !probably the result of not having enough sleep last night,my baby did not let  me  go back in bed with hubby .He wanted me to stay beside him all night long. The following morning, me and my eldest son woke up late at 7 am .Good thing was,I still have some left over pancakes in the ref for his breakfast. The youngest woke up at 7:20 am ,just in time for me to take the eldest to school with him at the back of the car strapped on a car seat..

School is few blocks away from our house and one minute drive only, so there is no way for us to be late.

Someone That I Used to Love

When I wake up each morning
Trying to find myself
And if I’m ever the least unsure
I always remind myself
Though you’re someone in this world
That all always choose to love
From now on you’re only someone
That I used to love
As for me
It’s getting down to the last
Unspoken part
When you must begin to ease
The pain of a broken heart
Tell me why should I even care
If I have to lose your love
From now on you’re only someone
That I used to love
I wish it was enough for you
All the love I had to give
And I did my best
To keep you satisfied
I guess you’ll never know
How much I tried
I really tried
And if ever our paths
Should cross again
Well, you won’t find me
Neath the one to get lost again
Once I had so much to give
But you just refused my love
From now on you’re only someone
That I used to love
And I did my best
To keep you satisfied
I guess you’ll never know
How much I tried
I really tried
When I wake up each morning
Trying to find myself
And if I’m ever the least unsure
I always remind myself
Though you’re someone in this world
That all always choose to love
From now on you’re only someone
That I used to love
From now on you’re only someone
That I used to love
Though you’re someone in this world
That all always choose to love
From now on you’re only someone
That I used to love
From now on you’re only someone
That I used to love...

Oklahoma Trip

I have no idea what to right today .It's a Friday, hubby's day off. We had breakfast in bed while watching his favorite tv show"The Bill Cosby Show". Pancake and bacon was pretty good. My Children was in their room playing with the computer and watching "Sesame Street".

What else to do during Fridays, aside from going to church at 10 am to 12 noon ?Go home, prepare our lunch and at the same time do the laundry.

And of course my day is not complete without surfing the net.And while reading others blog, I got the chance to look into my old photographs and just found out some nice view in one of our US trip back in 2007 at Oklahoma. These were the 3 different lakes that we visited during our vacation and one of them is the Gary and Raymond lake, one of hubby's  favorite fishing spot.

Today is my Wedding Day !

At last after a long days and sleepless nights of preparations from wedding dress to entourage to reception here comes the much awaited Wedding Day.

This it! There is no turning back and we are going to marry the love of our life. But no matter how happy you both are on the special day you cannot help but worry .The groom waiting uneasily inside the church, worried that the bride might change her mind and won't show up anymore while the bride on the other hand is worried of being late on the wedding ceremony because the wedding gown doesn't fit well and the make up didn't turn out to be as perfect as she want it to be.

How was your wedding day? How excited or worried were you during that day? Please share your experiences here. Have you had any regret being married to her/him?

Note" This bog was posted in Qatar living/Filex group on Sat, 30/08/2008 when one of my friends got married in Doha, Qatar. My oldest son was the coin bearer while my youngest one was only 1 month old then. And of course my family is not complete without my handsome husband on his blue polo shirt .

The bride looks gorgeous on her white wedding dress and the equally good looking groom on his black suit. The wedding was simple yet elegant with only few closed friends and some relatives as witnessed on their very special day.The reception was held in a hotel function room and attended by more friends who shared with their happiness and at the same time enjoyed the good food and programs prepared by the wedding coordinator. The couples eyes was filled with love and joy and was indeed a night to cherished ."

What a Dream !

Ang ganda ng panaginip ko last night. Nakaka nose bleed.

This is one of the best dream I ever had.

Valentines 2010

I have 2 sick kids on Valentines day.My both has cough and cold.I brought them at the Children's Hospital .The oldest was prescribed with Zyrtec and Paracetamol and one day sick leave while the youngest with Augmentin , Zyrtec and Paracetamol.Being out for school for one day makes my eldest so happy . For a long time ,he was praying and begging me to allow him to take time out from school like most of his classmate does and this is it.This kids really amazed me ,they took medicines and did not feel dizzy or sleepy at all. R was on his computer and Nintendo DS all day long while J played like he is not sick at all.

I called hubby at the office just to let him know what is going on with the kids but he was at the meeting and promised to call me back as soon as he is free .After an hour ,he called back and hang up without mentioning about the Valentines day.Hubby came home ,I fixed his lunch while he watched his favorite TV show. Then he asked me,"What is the date today?".I answered,"13 or 14?why? ".And that was when I realized that it is A Valentines day and said sorry for not remembering the Hearts day. Hubby answered back ,"me too, Happy Valentines dear!"and held my hand as I greeted him back.

Just an ordinary day ,no flowers for me this time!Oh ,well, what can I do.Anyway ,we celebrates Valentines everyday and it is the thoughts that counts.

Curacha

Reminds me of Jozhil, ang babaing walang pahinga(a woman without rest),QL/Filex certified Miss Curacha,2008 and KP's most active member awardee and Rozana Roces for her movie with the same title, playing the role of a dancer,a woman without rest. But there is one curacha that is truly mouth watering and truly hard to resist.

Curacha-A local Chavacano name given to this sea crab species that is uniquely found in the waters around Zamboanga, and no where else in the world. It is popularly described as a high bred crustacean, with crossbreed characteristics of a large sea crab and the big spiny lobster. Thus, it is unusually large [reddish-pink in color] for a hybrid crab and quite meaty, and oh so delicious! A special Zamboanga City treat.

Cooking Instructions:
Steam or boil in plain water, until cooked to desired level. Curacha is best experienced in its natural exotic flavor, cooked minimally so as to preserve its original taste.

If you care to add a touch of local flavor to it, mix in some lemongrass and about 3-5 cups of coconut milk to sauce, and boil until done. Sauce topping could be enhanced with ginger, grated coconut meat, sea salt, pepper, red chilis, and choice vegetables.

Serve with: Steamed rice and fresh Latu (seaweed/sea grapes) or salad.

Why don't you Share your favorite recipes or your towns very own dish and we might try it in our house one of these days.

Seafood and Barbecue Feast

Doha, Qatar

My 2 sons woke up this morning not feeling well because of cough and cold. I gave them both cough syrup and hopefully will be better later on. My youngest son Julian, did not sleep well last night because of clogged nose so I had to stay up beside him all night.

Yesterday was entirely a good day, me and my eldest son went out for a seafood and barbecue feast at a beach with my friends. He jumped straight into the water once we got there while I did chat with some of my friends who came earlier at the place to save the area and prepare the barbecue grills. It was really fun seeing those friends with their families and children who enjoys swimming at the cold sea water of the rich Country of Qatar.

The place is just around the city right beside the Intercontinental Hotel, no cottage to rent, no stores to buy food, no vendors around, no electricity, just trees and a view overlooking the City Center shopping mall . People of different nationalities were having fun with picnic baskets, chairs tables and mats with them and some even enjoys music from their car stereos. The only thing that protects us from the sun lights are Dates trees and thick clothes. The weather was perfectly cool and fresh without even a trace of air pollution yet. I wonder what would become of this place 10 years from now. Food was superb and overflowing especially crabs. Lunch was ready at 12 noon and each one of us enjoyed our plate full of food especially when fish, squid and pork ribs barbecue were served straight from the grill. And of course what is a barbecue party without hot dogs on stick.

It was indeed one of my unforgettable weekend but we need to go back home early for my youngest son who stayed home with his father.

Looking forward for another fun filled days with my friends again. And what would be the next event? Probably a group's 3rd year Anniversary at the beach again ?

Home Along the Riles...

THE RILES" tv show nila Dolphy at Claudine Barreto. Napakapopular nitong comedy show noong araw at pinakaaabangan ng lahat every week.

Food Trip

Filipino's are known to be food lovers kahit saang bansa pa mapunta. We will try every food that is new to our sight regardless of the price Kaya naman kabi kabila ang mga kainan sa iba't ibang sulok ng Pilipinas at kulang ang isang department store kung walang fastfood area na punung puno lagi ng tao.

I like Jollibee more than Mc Donald .I love their crispy chicken joy, palabok and hotdog sandwich. But here in Qatar whenever I crave for hamburger I go for Mc Donald's fillet o'fish meal or cheese burger with french fries and small soda
When it comes to fried chicken,Max's is the best for me plus their fresh lumpia .Paano kaya nila niluluto yon?simple lang pero sarap to the bones.
Masarap din daw ang Mary brown with gravy but I haven't tasted it yet.Kenny Roger's has its chicken and ribs with side dishes na pwede na rin if you feel like eating affordable American foods .Chowking has a wide variety of good tasting Chinese food but don't try it here in Qatar because their taste and servings are not as good as in the Philippines.Hmmm,KFC ,pwede na kung type mo kumain ng friend chicken with gravy on the side. .Dito kasi sa Qatar ,no gravies kaya parang bitin ang kain so magtyaga ka na lang sa ketchup.
At pag tinatamad naman akong mgaluto ,nadyan ang Pizza hut for home delivery.Medium super supreme and lasagna with garlic bread for me and hubby , hawaiian pizza and spicy chicken wings naman for my son.

More than 3 years na rin pala kong di umuuwi ng Pinas .last time I went back home ay nung kunin ko ang anak ko and I stayed there for 1 month .And of course ,vacation is not complete without visiting these fastfoods and restaurants.Unahin ko na ang Henlins for their siomai na may masarap na chili sauce,,syempre di ko makakalimutan yan kahit pa nakatayo lang ako sa gilid gilid. And of course, Pancake house for plain and flavored pancakes and waffles for breakfast .
Dencio's with their best selling sisig, ,crispy pata ,sinugba , bulalo and grilled foods.

At heto pa :
Casa Ilongga, the best ang La Paz Batchoy ever.
Barrio Fiesta - kare-kare and crispy pata at meron din silang eat all you can.
Goldilocks – ensaymada, dinuguan matching with puto pao
Red Ribbon – cakes and pastries.
Panciteria- Pancit Malabon sa bilao...
lumpia house - fish balls, tempura, squid balls
ice cream castle – halo halo
Greenwich- lasagna with garlic bread and pizza.
Wendys-iced tea and burger and garden sensations salad.

Street Food

I am an OFW for 11 years now, I left Philippines in 1999 to work in a Military hospital in Saudi Arabia and then to Qatar in 2003 to get a better chance of giving my son a good life. Being an OFW there are a lot of things to do in order to survive like cooking your own food, doing the laundry which we don't usually do back home. We have our loving mother or housemaid who takes care of everything for us. Cooking is not an easy job but we have to do it in order to survive.
